Mobile Loaves & Fishes’ food truck ministry is operated almost entirely by volunteers and managed by partner organizations throughout Austin who have collaborated with MLF.

Specific opportunities and details vary from one truck partner location to another, but may include the following volunteer roles:

Volunteers typically commit to a recurring once-per-month schedule on the same make-ready team. They prepare sandwiches and other meal items and assist as needed with loading trucks with food, clothing and other toiletries that will be distributed. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteers usually commit to recurring once-per-month involvement on the same truck team. Routes are pre-determined by the truck team captain, and volunteers assist with the distribution of food and other items at each of the stops during their shift. The goal of each truck run is to connect human to human, heart to heart with our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness. An average truck run generally lasts around 2 hours depending on the itinerary. Each MLF food truck holds six people including the driver, and any volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteers commit to bringing in three dozen hard-boiled eggs once per month for use as a food item delivered on truck runs. (Opportunity varies by MLF partner location.)

Volunteers make cookies and brownies to put on MLF food trucks as desserts. Baked goods are bagged into individual hearty servings and help satisfy many a sweet tooth!

Several local businesses and bakeries donate products to help support MLF’s food truck operation. Volunteers in these areas can help by picking up these donated items when needed and delivering them to the respective food commissary.

Volunteer groups can sponsor a non-perishable food drive or a clothing drive to benefit an MLF food truck partner. Items needed include new or gently used clothing, shoes, non-perishable food items, Capital Metro bus passes, HEB/Walmart gift cards and travel-size toiletries. (Please discuss specific needs with your truck program’s volunteer coordinator.)

Your support helps our Truck Ministries spread the Goodness to our homeless brothers and sisters all over Austin.
